"Stories of Refuge" illustrates the strength of the human spirit. This series of portraits tells the stories of courageous refugees from around the world who escaped war-torn countries and persecution and fled to Denmark where they are working to rebuild their lives. These are heartbreaking and inspiring stories of struggle, resilience, determination and hope. This series was originally created alongside human rights photographer Sasja van Vechgel for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Denmark and was published on the UNHCR Northern Europe website.
“My dreams have changed a lot in the last 10 years. What I mostly want now is to have a good career, to provide a good living for myself and for my family, if I will get a family soon."
"My goal is to become the best musician I can be and to replace the 'King of Pop'. I plan to work as hard as I can to take that spot. Music has always been a tool we utilize to raise us up in our times of sorrow and celebrate in our times of happiness."
“My big dreams are for humanity; to respect humanity and each other’s opinions. My personal dream is to have family."
"My dream is to be in a place where I don't have to worry about being sent away."
"My dream is for my family. I would like us to stay and live here in Denmark."
"I see our future being very good in Denmark. I hope to have a nice life and good work. Maybe I will be a doctor, or maybe a politician, I don’t know."
